How to do a Step-Up
- Stand facing a sturdy chair, box, or step.
- Place one full foot flat on top of the surface.
- Drive through that heel to stand tall on top, avoiding a push off the back foot.
- Bring the trailing foot up to meet it or tap and hover.
- Step back down with control, leading with the same foot.
- Complete your reps, then switch the lead leg.
Keep in mind
- Pick a height where your knee is at or below hip level at the top.
- Press through the whole front foot — mid-foot and heel, not the toes.
- Stand all the way up and pause for a beat before stepping down.
- Lower yourself down; don't fall off the step.
Common mistakes
- Pushing off the back foot — let the working leg do the work.
- Hips shifting sideways at the top — keep the pelvis level.
- Only half the foot on the platform — plant it fully before you press.
Breathing
Breathe out as you press up, in as you lower back down.
Take care
Use something that will neither slide nor tip, and set it against a wall if there is any doubt.
